Clear Out Clutter Before You Move
"To me, if life boils down to one thing, it's movement.
To live is to keep moving."
Jerry Seinfeld
May and June are busy months in the real estate
business...statistically, more people move around now than any other
time of the year.
And what do most people do when they move?
They are already overwhelmed with all the details involved in a
move, so rather than take the time to carefully go through their
things, they pack up their clutter and move it right along with them to
their new home (with good intentions of going through it once they get
there, of course).
Moving is such a great time to sort through your stuff.
And moving is about so much more than simply shifting your furniture from one home to another.
It's
about setting up your life in a new place. It's about a fresh, new
approach to your day-to-day. It's about shaking up the foundation of
your world and looking around you with new eyes.
And when you clear out the clutter, you let go of the past and put both feet firmly in the present.
As you've heard me say, 75% of what most people have in their homes is no longer serving them (in other words, it's clutter).
Can you imagine how much easier it would be to move if you only had to move one-fourth of your stuff? :)
So whether you are planning a move or not, now is a great time to start clearing out that other 75%.
Start anywhere. Start small. Choose one drawer, one shelf, or one corner of one room.
Take each item out of its normal spot and take a good look at
it. When is the last time you can remember using it? When can you
imagine using it in the next month or so? Do you love it? Does it lift
your energy, or drain it?
If it's a keeper, go ahead and pack it.
And if not, have that big garage sale you've been meaning to
have for years. Donate all of it to your favorite charity. List it on
Craig's List or Freecycle.
And start off your new life in your new home surrounded by things that
bring you joy NOW...(without hauling all of that other stuff along with
you!)
