Organizing Kids' Rooms
"All of us have moments in our
lives that test our courage.
Taking children into a
house with a white carpet is one of them."
Erma Bombeck
Organizing a kid's room can seem like a big, huge, overwhelming
project, can't it?
Well, let's make it much easier.
Sound good?
First of all, the biggest organizing issue in any household typically
has nothing to do with organizing.
Surprised?
The real issue usually has to do with how much stuff you've actually
got.
If you have a lot of stuff, it's going to be much, much, much harder to
organize it in the first place, much less keep it looking neat and
tidy.
And organizing a kid's room? It's even MORE important to clear out the
excess.
1. Clear out everything that isn't your child's stuff.
Yep, that's right.
Take out all the stuff you've been storing in their bedroom or closet
or under their bed. You know, like the extra towels that matched the
bathroom you had three houses ago and the ice cream maker that doesn't
fit anywhere else.
Organizing a kids room doesn't mean filling it up with your
stuff...that just makes the job that much harder.
Let your child have his or her own space.
2. Have a laundry hamper that is designed for kids.
Dirty clothes all over the floor immediately make a kid's room look
messy, right?
So
make it easy for her to use a hamper. Choose one that is fun (in the
shape on an animal, or with a basketball hoop) so they will actually
want to use it.
3. Clear out outdated or unused toys.
Toys have a sneaky way of multiplying overnight, don't they? :)
You'll want to regularly give the toys a good clear-out (see
organizing
kids' toys
) to get started.
And check here for more specifics on how to
organize
kids' toys.
4. Set up a closet that actually works for your child.
When you have the right tools, you automatically help make the job that
much easier.
Your child's closet is a great example. Check out lots of practical
ways to organize your
child's closet.
