The Butterfly Effect of Clearing Clutter
"...you'll find that making a change in your living space
- say, taking down one photograph and putting up another -
can have equally far-reaching effects, sending you down
a slightly different path that hardly shows in the short term
but putting you in a very different place
at some point in the future."

One definition of the Butterfly Effect explains it as:
"the phenomenon whereby a small change at one place
in a complex system can have large effects elsewhere,
e.g., a butterfly flapping its wings in Rio de Janeiro
might change the weather in Chicago."
I often invite my program participants to clear their clutter in
layers, one tiny step at a time...and the Butterfly Effect is one
reason.
When you make a small change in your environment, you also
make a corresponding change to what's happening inside of you, as well
as other areas in your life that are completely unrelated to the area
you changed.
For example, when you make one simple change in your environment, like
putting your mail in your in-box instead of in a pile on the kitchen
counter, you are actually kicking off a chain reaction of habits,
beliefs, intention, awareness, and focus.
You are setting into motion an entire new way of approaching that part of your day.
And
even though the action itself may seem insignificant (in truth, it's
highly significant), the effect of the action has a ripple effect that
goes far beyond the act itself.
I've seen clients clean out their closet, and the next day get
unstuck on the book they've been trying to write because they finally
gave themselves permission to move forward in their lives.
Or they toss out some old photos they didn't love, and
unexpectedly create a new, healthier relationship with feuding siblings
because they are communicating differently about getting their own
needs met.
I've also seen clients get rid of junk in their basement, and shortly
after, raise their rates in their business because they realize how
much value they are truly providing their clients.
I've seen these Butterfly Effects happen enough times that I
now fully anticipate them to happen. Butterfly Effects aren't
predictable (that's why they are so magical), but they DO show up every
time.
