What Is It Time
To Let Go Of?
"I had actively participated in every moment
of creating this life,
so why didn't I see myself in any of it?
The only thing more impossible than staying
was leaving."
Julia Roberts
as Liz in "Eat, Pray, Love"
I've been organizing all my life.
But it wasn't until I was 30 years old that I started to understand the power of intentionally letting go.
Up until that time, I was in active, happy accumulation mode.
I had spent years accumulating experiences, education, skills, and knowledge.
I had accumulated quite a line-up of people in my life...friends,
classmates, acquaintances, colleagues, clients, bosses, and neighbors.
I had collected a nice, full roster of obligations and responsibilities.
I filled up my schedule with activities, hobbies, work, social events...I didn't want to miss anything.
With my husband at the time, we had also built a big, brand-new house and loaded it full of stuff.
And I LOVED the accumulation phase.
Until I woke up one day and I realized that, at some point, I
no longer saw ME in what I had accumulated in my life. I had gotten
lost in all that clutter somehow.
And it was time to start chipping away at what no longer fit so I could find myself again.
Each time I let go of something that no longer fit who I was, I
felt more connected with myself again. Not all of the choices to let go
were easy...in fact, sometimes letting go can feel like the hardest
thing in the world to do.
But letting go is the only way to make room for who you are becoming.
And it is always, always, always worth it.
The prelude to letting go is often a soft, gentle little voice inside that lets you know something doesn't quite fit anymore.
You may start questioning something that used to play an important role in your life.
And once you start questioning, what often comes next is an internal struggle..."should I keep it?"..."should I let it go?"
"Should I stay on the board, or step down as chairperson?"
"Do we keep the boat, or sell it?"
"Will I ever wear this again?"
"Should I stay in this relationship, or let it go?"
"Do I keep working this way in my business?"
One thing I have noticed is that once you start questioning
something, it will continue to quietly whisper to you until you have
decided...and often the answer is to move forward and let go.
That's why the gentle voice showed up in the first place. It's
your first clue that it's time to let go of something so you can make
room for what's next.
So where are you hearing a gentle voice inside of you, whispering that it's time to let go?
What is it time to let go of?
It's safe to let go.
