Your Very Own Archeological Dig
"If we knew what was there,
we wouldn't have to dig."
Richard Boisvert

One of the things I'm always telling my clients is that clearing out
your stuff is like taking a personal archeological dig into your own
life.
And you never know what you're going to find. :)
Just the other day I felt motivated to go through my filing
cabinets, email, and computer documents...and I was surprised at what I
uncovered.
(And then, knowing what I know about clutter, I was surprised that I was surprised!)
One thing I unearthed was about 20 half-completed versions of
some writing I have been working on for the last year, that I kept
going back to and not really finishing.
And I actually hadn't noticed that I had not truly finished
any of the versions until I started going through my files. These
versions were cleverly hidden under different headings, under
completely unrelated subjects, so I did not notice I had been repeating
my writing over and over and over again.
I had been telling myself that I needed more information, or
that I needed to take a break from that particular writing because it
simply wasn't flowing, or any number of other reasons in the moment.
Well, now I know exactly why I was getting bogged
down...twenty half-finished editions of anything means my mind is split
in twenty different directions. Plus, each time I leave another edition
incomplete, I give myself the unintended internal message that I can't
complete it.
Once I saw all of these partial versions and realized what was
going on, I could feel my energy drain out of me like water flowing out
of a sieve.
So I started clearing out those old versions. Delete, delete, delete. Shred, shred, shred.
What had felt stuck and overwhelming now felt like freedom. Ease. Flow.
(And the
very next day I had the clarity and insight to complete the writing.)
As you go on your personal archeological dig through your stuff, pay attention to what you find.
Notice the patterns.
Watch what happens to your energy.
See where your emotions flare.
Pay attention to what makes you feel like you're in the flow, and what makes you feel stuck and blocked and overwhelmed.
You can learn everything about your beliefs, where you get
stuck, and where you experience pure ease and flow, simply by going on
your own personal archeological dig into your stuff.
