Listen to What Makes Your Heart Sing
"No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten."
Natasha Bedingfield
"Unwritten" lyrics
This morning, I had the little inkling to listen to a playlist
of songs that I had created on iTunes several years back (basically the
virtual equivalent of a 1980's mixed tape).
And I was instantly transported into delight.
My heart was wide open, enjoying some of my very favorite
music. Songs like Unwritten, by Natasha Bedingfield. The Boxer by Simon
and Garfunkel.
Toss in a little Tom Petty, Peter Gabriel, Natalie Merchant,
Jim Croce, Sarah McLachlan, Counting Crows, and some Norah Jones to
slow it down a bit. Add lots of John Mayer. A sprinkling of Eternal Om
by what sounds like monks. A little soothing piano music by Alex Grant.
Some amazing Spanish-style guitar by Johannes Lindstead.
I spent an hour dancing and singing this morning while doing
my morning routine. Actually, I tossed out my usual morning routine and
spent it singing and trying out salsa dance moves instead.
When you find music like that, listen to it.
And when you go through your albums and cassettes and CDs and
find music that really doesn't make you feel wonderful, what about
letting it go?
Create space in your life for the things that make your heart
sing, and then use them. Listen to your favorite music. Wear your
favorite clothes. Eat off your favorite dishes. Don't save them "for
company" or "for good."
Now is good.
You are your very best company.
Find one of your favorite songs today and listen to it. Really feel how it makes you feel.
Sing out loud in your car. Dance around your bedroom in your underwear. Jitterbug with your kids or your sweetie or your dog.
I'll be the one singing along in the car next to yours.
