Closet Organizing Ideas
to Create The Closet of Your Dreams

Want some
GREAT closet
organizing ideas?
You're in the right place.
And, well...ummmm...the secret is out.
Here's the secret.
I absolutely LOVE closets.
All closets...
tiny
little closets, huge walk-in closets, and everything in between.
(In fact, someone once called closets my 'Organizational O'...if you
know what I mean.)
Why this love of closets, you might ask?
Great question!
Closets are where we
start our day. We get dressed in front of our closet. We
get ourselves ready to face the world with the help of our closets.
Our closets help us create perception. They help us create the persona
we present.
And our closets might as well look
absolutely
fabulous while doing it, in my opinion.
Imagine opening up your closet door in the morning and getting a big
smile on your face.
Imagine that
you like
how it looks.
You
like what's in there. Imagine that it's fun to visit your
closet. (In fact, I've had clients tell me that, after taking one of my
closet programs, they like to go and just sit in their closet
and hang out in there, simply because it looks so good and makes them
feel so good.)
Not your ordinary closet, n'est-ce pas?
And here's the thing. Having a closet you love doesn't mean it has to
be huge and filled with designer clothes.
It simply has to be a
closet
that YOU love, that works for you, that makes it easy to
get dressed in the morning.
So let's talk about closet organizing ideas, shall we?
Every time I talk about organizing, I always talk about
clearing out
the clutter
first.
Clear out what you no longer love, what you no longer wear, what
doesn't fit, and what doesn't flatter you.
For most people, that's about 75% of their stuff. Seriously.
After clearing that stuff out, your closet already looks better,
doesn't it?
Now it can
breathe.
Closet Organizing Ideas:
- For a clothes closet, it's
best to take everything that isn't clothes or wardrobe related and move
it out of that closet to store somewhere else (or better yet, get rid of the item
if it isn't playing an active role in your life). I mean, who wants to
see a bowling ball and a typewriter stashed in their clothes closet?
- Put
everything where you can easily see it and get at it. If you have items
that are hidden, underneath other items, or tucked up high on a shelf
that you can't reach, you're not likely to use them.
- For that reason, I'm
a big fan of hanging pretty much everything,
rather than folding and stacking things. Anytime you have a pile of
anything, it's going to be a nightmare to keep looking great, right?
- Hanging everything keeps things looking much neater, and
also lets you truly see what you've got.
- The
only things to put in drawers or bins would be underwear and socks. In
fact, I haven't used a dresser in years because I have simplified my
closet so much.
- If you're hanging most of your items, you'll want to make
sure you have plenty of
clothing rod space, too. You can easily add extra rods to
give you more hanging space.
- You can also add hooks
to closet doors and walls
to give yourself lots of extra storage space. Hooks are great for
jackets, bathrobes, pajamas, accessories...the uses for hooks are
endless (plus, they're so easy to keep looking great).
Here are some of my favorite
closet
organizing ideas for storage:
- Plastic bins
with lids to store socks, underwear, hosiery, bathing suits...use one
bin for each category, and you'll always know exactly what you've got
(and the lids keep dust from getting on the items). I like storing
these bins one-deep on a shelf. Every time you start stacking bins you
start adding to your opportunity to create a mess, because the one you
want is usually on the bottom!
- Floor baskets
for laundry, dry cleaning, or gym clothes.
- Simple shoe
racks or shelves.
- Great hangers! Either wood
or sturdy plastic hangers
(my favorite is white because you can always buy more and make sure
they'll match!)...this one tip alone will transform the look of your
closet.
The best closet organizing ideas are simple...so you can actually
do them and just as
importantly, so you can maintain them.
