Declutter Tips:
It's NOT About Your Stuff
The
best declutter tips
are not always about the 'how to' of clearing
clutter...in fact, the clutter is NOT about your stuff.
"We don't see things as
they are;
we see things as we are."
Anais Nin
You've probably read that quotation by Anais Nin before, right?
But did you ever look at your stuff in that way?
Here's what I mean:
Your stuff is NOT about
your stuff.
The reasons you hold on to it, the meaning you give it, the emotional
connection you have to it...none of it is about the stuff.
The meaning we give our things is actually about us, and about who we
are, not about the item itself.
One
person may see a broken flower pot in the backyard as junk and toss it
without a second thought...and another person may see the very same
flower pot and lovingly remember grandma using that pot every single
year to hold daisies and feel love and connection looking at the pot.
Same flowerpot, with a completely different interpretation and meaning.
And
the emotional
connection is what can make it seem SO hard to let go
of certain items, right?
But here's the truly wonderful news: the wonderful memories,
emotions, and feelings are inside of the person holding those
memories...and will still exist, with or without the flower pot.
None
of the love will go away if you choose to get rid of the flowerpot,
because the love has nothing to do with the flowerpot itself anyway.
So when you're considering letting go of an item, remember that we
don't see things as they are, we see things as WE are. :)
