How to Organize Your Home
Learning how to organize your home starts with
clearing
clutter;
letting go of what is no longer serving you
first makes the
organizing process so much easier!
To clear your clutter in your home, it helps to start one room at a
time (one drawer at a time, one shelf at a time, one closet at a time).
Many people get all fired up about clearing everything out, and then
about half-way through they get overwhelmed and tired, and then they
are left with a big mess on their hands.
Start small!
And allow for the feelings to come up, because that's what's really
happening when you are clearing out your stuff. You are excavating your
own life. You are looking into your own soul. Not simply clearing out
some things.
You may also want some help (check out my group
programs). Lots of people
find that it is very supportive to find out they are not the only ones
who have clutter to clear.
For most people, about 75% of what is currently in their home is no longer serving the life they are living today. 75% is a lot of stuff!!
Imagine if you let go of even
half
of what you are keeping because you 'might need it someday.' Or because
you are storing it to give to your children when they grow up (they are
now three and five). Or because you are hoping to fit into those pants
again.
You'd have a lot more room in your closets, wouldn't you?
Once you have gently cleared out the clutter, it's time to know how to organize your home.
Start
by grouping like items together. For example, kitchen items should be
in the kitchen. Bathroom items should be in the bathroom. Sheets should
be stored together.
Many people have similar items put in
different places all over the house. Then they wonder why they can
never find anything. Or why they keep buying pairs of scissors, until
they finally realize they have twelve pairs!
So store like items together.
Second,
eliminate as many duplicates as possible. So rather than having emery
boards in every room of the house, for example, have one really good
one, keep it in your bathroom, and get rid of all the rest.
Next, create a 'home' for everything, and put everything back in its place after using it.
Sounds
simple, doesn't it? Yet this one simple habit will make and keep a home
organized more than any other trick or technique you can possibly
imagine.
See, learning how to organize your home does not have to be complicated. A few simple details go a long, long way.
