How to Organize Kids Toys

Want specific, helpful tips to organize kids toys - you know, the kind of tips you can actually USE in the real world?

Step 1: Decide Where You'll Keep Toys

First, if at all possible, designate ONE area of the house where all the toys are kept. If you have the room, a room that is designated as 'the playroom' is ideal.

Otherwise, will all toys be stored in your kids' room? In the family room?

If you store toys in every room in your home, it's going to be very tough to get and stay organized (and not feel like the toys are taking over the house).

Step 2: Clear Out The Toy Clutter

Next, it's important to clear out excess toys before you even start organizing.

Step 3: Organize What's Left

The secret to organize kids toys is to watch how they handle their own stuff.

Most kids are in a hurry and want to get at what they want RIGHT NOW.

You can make it easy for them.

You can help your kids get organized and stay organized by providing them with the right tools to organize kids toys.

One big toy box will not do the job.

Why?

Kids toys often have small parts that get lost easily. Legos, anyone? (Which happen to be one of my very favorite toys, by the way.)

And to find all of those little tiny pieces, they'd have to dump the whole toy box out or throw their whole body in there to try to find them.

No wonder stuff gets everywhere.

Organize Kids Toys Little boxes and bins work great. I especially LOVE those plastic shoe-box size crates (and larger) with lids...you could have several for Legos, some for doll clothes, more for crayons or sidewalk chalk, others for match-box cars, and yet another for the choo-choo train with lifelike trees, mountains, and houses to go on the side.

Ziplock storage bags also work great to store and group tiny items.

Those clear plastic hanging shoe bags (you know, the kind that go over the top of a door and hang down the door) work great for small stuffed animals.

Teaching your child how to group similar items to be stored together can be a full education in itself, so make it a game.

A simple bookshelf or wire shelf can hold numerous small plastic boxes, and when your child wants to play Legos in the living room, he can just bring one or two of the boxes out, leave the rest neat and tidy, and off he goes.

In theory, anyway. :)

And clean-up is easier, too. Box up the Legos right in the living room and bring the whole thing back and put it on the shelf.

Make sure your child can actually reach everything that she uses, too, so she can start getting it out and putting it away herself (i.e. won't have to keep asking you for help!)...teach your kids how to organize kids toys, and your life will be much, much easier.

Plus, your kids will earn the confidence and self-esteem that comes from taking care of their own stuff.

Learning the tricks to organize kids toys (and the rest of their room as well) really can be as simple as that.
