Organizing a Garage:
Gardening Supplies

Organizing a garage can be completely overwhelming if you try to tackle it all at once, which is why I break it down into bite-sized, easily do-able pieces.

Gather all of your lawn and garden care supplies and tools together, and before you decide how to organize them, see what you can get rid of. The less you have to organize, the easier it will be.

Here are some common lawn and garden supplies:

  • rakes
  • hoes
  • shovels
  • garden hoses
  • weed wackers
  • lawn mower
  • gardening hand tools
  • fertilizer
  • insecticide
  • potting soil
  • pots
  • watering cans
  • gardening gloves
  • gardening knee pads
  • vegetable seeds
  • plant seeds
  • grass seed

Set Aside An Area For Your Gardening Supplies

Set aside space for each category of items you'll be storing. Create an area dedicated for your gardening tools and supplies, and you'll always be able to find what you need, right when you need it.

Group Similar Items Together

Once you have cleared out the stuff you will no longer keep, look at what's left. Do you have a lot of tall items, like rakes and hoes? Group all of them together, see how many you have, and store them on hanging hooks or in a specially designed rack.

Do you plant a lot of flowers? Do you love to grow a huge vegetable garden? What do you most need your gardening area to be able to allow you to do? Put items that you need for specific activities together.

Store Small Items in Containers

For items like seeds, hand tools, and other small items, store them in bins or drawers so they are easily contained (it's hard to keep a pile of hand tools neat, but they automatically look tidy when they're in a plastic bin with a lid).

Store Hazardous Items Carefully

Store fertilizers, pesticides, and other hazardous items on higher shelves or in locked cupboards as you are organizing a garage so children and pets don't have access to them.

Keep Often-Used Items Close At Hand

Keep items you use often in locations that are easy to reach and quick to grab. You may also find that as the seasons change, when organizing a garage, you may need to switch these items (in summer you want the lawn mower handy, while in winter you want to be able to easily access the snow blower, for example).
