Organizing Garage Areas:
Bikes, Helmets, and Gear
When organizing garage areas, bicycles and related gear can easily take
over a garage if you're not careful.
And more than one unoccupied bike has been run over by a car after
being carelessly tossed on the ground in the garage after riding.
It's easy to create neat, tidy, and easy storage for bicycles, helmets
and other gear...and you have many options to choose from.
As
always, before you choose the best organizing solution for you and your
home, make sure to first see if there is anything you can get rid of.
There's no use storing something you're not using, don't love, and
don't see using in the foreseeable future. Check your bicycles,
helmets, and other biking gear to see if there is anything you are
ready to let go (sell, donate, etc.)
Bike Storage Options
You can choose:
- Free-standing horizontal
wheel bike racks
are the kind of racks you see in school yards and parks, and stand on
the ground. They are great if you have kids who need easy access to
their bikes, especially if they don't have to keep running to you for
help getting them out. These racks tend to take up a lot of space on
your garage floor, however, so if you're cramped for space, you may want to
choose another option.
- Horizontal wall-mounted
racks can hold multiple bikes flush against the wall, and
often have
shelves or spaces for bike helmets and other gear. These racks are
great for narrow areas.
-
An off-the-wall vertical
hook runs from floor to ceiling and allows you to
store multiple bikes vertically up the wall.
- The simple one-hook
wall-mounted bike rack lets you hang one bike at a time on
the wall.
- Ceiling mounted systems that you can either access manually (with
a block-and-tackle pulley system) or using a motorized system to raise
and lower the stored bikes.
- Add shelving,
bins, or hooks for bike helmits and other gear, especially if they are
situated close to the bike storage for easy access
Children's Bikes
When organizing garage areas to allow your kids easy access to their
bikes, choose an option where they (or you!) don't have to lift the
bike down or reach over something else.
Free-standing bike racks are often your easiest option for kids.
Install a small shelf right above the rack for storing helmets, biking
shoes, and other accessories, and everything will be all in one place.
