One of the most transformational experiences of my life

Christi CollinsI’ve been doing a program (Streamline Your Success) by Sue Rasmussen… Sue believes that the way we act towards and treat our clutter is how we act towards and treat everything else in our lives. Do we hold on to things longer than they’re useful for us? Do we hold on to things that aren’t beautiful to us anymore? Do we hold on to things that make us feel bad? This applies not just to stuff, but to relationships, activities we’re involved in, and messages that we give ourselves. Sue uses decluttering as a way of getting at and dissolving those old patterns, habits, and beliefs that are no longer serving us. In a sense she does life transformation through clearing out our stuff… the physical and emotional and mental.

She’s taught me that simply clearing out stuff doesn’t change anything. If we don’t change the beliefs that allowed us to collect and hold on to the stuff in the first place, the stuff will just come back. Over and over again.

Over the course of this past year, I have decluttered my kitchen, my electronic and paper files, my inbox, my sentimental stuff, my crawl space, and almost every area of my house. It has been a layer-by-layer process… one that has been exhilarating at times, and challenging at times.

I am very picky about programs that I do, and I have to say that Sue’s program has been one of the most transformational experiences of my life. As she says, it starts with the clutter, but it is NOT really about the clutter!

She is a master life coach, and a remarkable woman, and I just wanted to share her website for anyone who’s looking to be LED through the decluttering process… especially in those places where we get stuck (“Oh, but this is a perfectly good towel, I can’t get rid of it… oh, but I should be able to fit back into those pants in a few months if I workout enough, so I can’t get rid of them… oh, but my mother gave me this, so even though she lives across the country I can’t get rid of it… oh, but I really mean to get back to sewing so I can’t get rid of all these drawers of fabric.”) And so on…
